A tufted, upright perennial grass up to 1.5 m tall with 30 cm leaves clustered at the base. Smooth stems branch at purple nodes, and seeds form clumps resembling barbed wire.

Lemon-scented leaves when crushed
Provides habitat for small mammals and frogs
Seeds eaten by rosellas
