A tall perennial sedge forming dense clumps up to 2.5 metres. It thrives in swamps and lagoons, with distinctive grey-green cylindrical stems topped with small brown flower spikes in spring and summer. The woody underground stems are edible, and its dense growth provides excellent habitat for water birds.
