Description:
Erect semi-succulent herb to 30cm tall, often forming clumps on boulders or rock outcrops with ferns. Leaves opposite, thick, to 5cm x 3cm, minutely hairy. Minute white flowers on spike to 10cm.
Special Features:
In Hawaii, where it is also found, it has a long history of use in traditional medicine, including treating bacterial infections. It has been used to treat various ailments, including abdominal pain, headaches, and for wound care. Studies suggest its leaf oil possesses anti-inflammatory properties, with potential therapeutic applications. It was also used to make dyes for kapa (traditional Hawaiian bark cloth).
