Description:
Uncommon dense shrub to 3m, usually with some axillary spines, at northern and western edge of the region and in drier rainforests of Gympie district. Leaves alternate, clustered, hairless, to 20mm, often with small sharp point. White tubular flowers to 10mm, throughout year. Yellowish-green spherical fruit to 5cm.
Special Features:
Produces edible, 2–3 cm diameter fruits that ripen from green to bright yellow or orange. They are reported to be sweet but sometimes slightly coarse, often used in jams and desserts. Suitable for screens, hedging, and, due to its spiny nature, excellent for protecting small birds (like finches and wrens) from predators. Also attracts bees and butterflies.
