Planchonella eerwah
Shiny-Leaved Coondoo; Flinders Plum
Sapotaceae
Description:
Endangered tree to 15m of drier rainforests, from ormeau and Boonah north to Eumundi. Sap milky. Leaves glabrous, dark and glossy, to 14cm long, paler below. Greenish axillary flowers to 7mm, winter to summer. Edible red to black oblong fruit to 6cm, with up to 5 smooth oblong brown seeds.
Special Features:
The tree bears large, dark red-purple to black fruit (3-6 cm long) that are edible. The fruit must be allowed to over-ripen to remove the hard, astringent taste, turning them quite sweet. The fruit serves as food for native mammals and birds. It is heavily used in recovery projects and conservation efforts, such as the "Black Plum Project," which aims to protect the species and its habitat.
