As part of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Wildflower Festival program, Coolum Community Native Nursery hosted The Great Banksia BBQ. Participants learned how to barbeque, process and propagate our unique local banksia species in a hands-on session.
Bushfires are a dramatic but natural part of the Australian landscape. Banksias are a fire-adapted species, holding their seeds in protective woody cases which are triggered to open by fire passing over. This allows the release of seeds post-flame.
Attendees at our workshop BBQed banksia cones and then collected and propagated seed from the cones. They planted 8 trays of seed, contributing to the nursery’s propagation program and took a few tubes of planted seed to raise at home.
The workshop was lively, engaging, and received excellent feedback from participants, who enjoyed both the practical techniques and the opportunity to connect with our local environment.
Look out for our next Banksia BBQ workshop, coming soon!
