Rain, Birds and Morning Tea: Our Bird Walk with Dr Adrian Gallagher
On Saturday 17 October, a small group of keen bird lovers joined avian veterinarian Dr Adrian Gallagher for a two-hour guided bird walk at the Coolum Eco Industrial Park.
The weather didn’t make it easy. Showers rolled through during the morning, but our eight participants turned up with binoculars in hand and rain jackets on. They were rewarded with a pocket of lovely weather midway through the walk, when the birds came out in force.
Adrian shared his knowledge of local species, their behaviours and how to identify them by sight and sound.
He also talked about how to observe birds responsibly in their natural habitat, the plants birds feed to and the different tree species of the area. Whether people were seasoned birders or just starting out, there was plenty to learn and plenty to spot.
Afterwards, everyone warmed up over morning tea and swapped stories about the best sightings of the day.
By the end of the morning, the group had recorded 38 species, including 30 Little Corella, 10 Welcome Swallow and 1 Striated Pardalote. The full list is below.
A big thank you to Adrian for generously sharing his time and expertise, to everyone who braved the conditions, and to our volunteers for helping the morning run smoothly.
Keep an eye on our events page for upcoming workshops and walks. We’d love to see you at the next one.
