Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens manage the Australian PlantBank located at Mount Annan, southwest of Sydney.
It is the home of research into Australian native plant conservation, genetics, seed collection and storage.
Clearly, it’s best to conserve plants in their natural environment but unfortunately, we don’t have a particularly good track record at that. The seed and tissue culture collections provide and insurance policy against the extinction of native plants in the wild and are used in restoring habitats, and even reintroducing threatened species back into the environment.
The PlantBank has over 100 million seeds from over 5000 species, representing 20% of Australia’s flora.
