The Australian PlantBank

Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens manage the Australian PlantBank located at Mount Annan, southwest of Sydney.

It is the home of research into Australian native plant conservation, genetics, seed collection and storage. Clearly, it’s best to conserve plants in their natural environment but unfortunately, we don’t have a particularly good track record at that. The seed and tissue culture collections provide and insurance policy against the extinction of native plants in the wild and are used in restoring habitats and even reintroducing threatened species back into the environment.

The PlantBank has over 100 million seeds from over 5000 species, representing 20% of Australia’s flora.

Edible native plants in the nursery

The Nursery has numerous native plants that can be eaten. While some are delicious, others may need an acquired taste before enjoying. If you decide to give them a try, please confirm you are about to eat the correct species!

We have started a series of workshops at the nursery and are thrilled by the interest. We could not possibly imagine that all the workshops will be full after 3 days!

Sorry for anyone who missed them, stay tuned for more workshops in the future on our web page: workshops
